Every 98 seconds, someone experiences sexual assault.
During the recent months, I’m sure you’ve noticed many women coming forward about past experiences. But what you probably aren’t hearing is that one in 9 girls under the age of 18 will experience sexual abuse or assault at the hands of an adult. And females aged 16 to 19 are four times more likely than the general population to be victims of rape, attempted rape, or sexual assault.
Experiencing sexual abuse often has long-lasting affects on the victim's mental health. Victims are more likely than non-victims to experience the following mental health challenges:
· About 4 times more likely to develop symptoms of drug abuse
· About 4 times more likely to experience PTSD as adults
· About 3 times more likely to experience a major depressive episode as adults
Unfortunately, only 6 out of every 1,000 rapists will end up in prison.
As we continue to spotlight various organizations that have missions that align with ours, this week we wanted to turn your attention to RAINN.
RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) is the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization. RAINN created and operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline (800.656.HOPE) in partnership with more than 1,000 local sexual assault service providers across the country. RAINN also carries out programs to prevent sexual violence, help survivors, and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.
If you’re interested in making a difference in the lives of survivors of sexual assault, RAINN has many different ways for you to get involved. Whether you have five minutes, five days, or five months, there's a path for you to make a difference in the lives of survivors of sexual violence. No matter how you choose to get involved, know that every bit counts.
To see more details about statistics like the ones mentioned above or to learn more, please visit RAINN. If you are the victim of sexual assault, RAINN has a 24/7 hotline that you can call anytime.
